3.4. Selection and Construction of Components

It can be expected, that there will be more suggestions for an improvement of the health information system as results of the evaluation phase of the systems engineering project, than can be realized during the time of the deployment. Therefore it has to be estimated which suggestions can and should be realized in the remaining time. The objectives of this thesis already foresee the introduction of a software application product (compare section 1.4. "Aim and Objectives of this Thesis"). Objective (iii) demands the design of a suitable data base scheme, which is able to handle the data of the district health system. The method for data base scheme design, which was introduced in section 2.4. "An Object Oriented Method for Database Scheme Design" shall be applied for this purpose. Objective (iv) requires a suitable presentation of compiled indicators. Therefore a software application product must be able to produce graphs of different kinds. Objective (v) demands a lucid user prompting of the software application product. Graphical user interfaces are normally used for this purpose. However, these usually require sufficient resources from the computers, on which they are installed. It must be expected, that these resources are very limited at the district level. Objective (vi) finally demands an software application product, which is free from further maintenance. Resulting from these objectives, it is obvious that a developing system for the software application product must already be selected and obtained before the actual deployment in the district. This includes a computer that provides sufficient resources for software development, since it can not be expected, that the district health team is able to remove a computer from daily activities for the duration of the software development. It has to be portable, reliable and must be able to run without external power in case of power breakdowns. Also a programming language must be obtained. It has to provide special features for the design of databases, graphic facilities and should be able to create single standing software application products.
